From a young age, Habibelrahman Hassan was surrounded by the world of civil engineering. Born in Egypt and raised in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), his early inspiration came from watching his father, a project manager in the field. “Seeing his passion for his work and the projects he managed was truly inspiring,” Hassan said. “Even on his off days, he would be involved in his projects, ensuring everything was on track. That kind of dedication spoke volumes to me.”
During high school, Hassan joined his father at site visits, witnessing firsthand the transformation of construction projects. These experiences solidified his interest in civil engineering, leading him to pursue his BS in civil engineering at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), Sharjah, UAE.
Joining an ACI Student Chapter
Hassan’s involvement with ACI began during his sophomore year at AUS. One of his colleagues was planning to start an ACI Student Chapter at the university and invited him to join as part of the founding Board. “I didn’t have much experience with clubs or academic organizations at that point, however, the focus on civil engineering caught my interest,” Hassan said. “I applied, did my interview, and was selected as the Executive Assistant on the Board.”
The timing was opportune as their first event, held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, featured Siham Al Shanti, 2020-2021 ACI Foundation Middle East & North Africa Fellowship recipient. “Hearing her speak about her experience and how the fellowship had helped her was incredibly motivating,” Hassan explained. “Even though I wasn’t eligible at the time, I kept the fellowship in mind for future opportunities.”
The Fellowship Application Process
After completing his undergraduate degree, Hassan pursued his master’s degree in civil engineering at AUS. It was during this period that he decided to apply for the ACI Foundation Middle East & North Africa Fellowship. “I had known about the fellowship for a few years and was determined to apply when I became eligible,” he said. “Ensuring I met all the requirements, including being a graduate student during the fellowship period, was crucial.”
The application process involves several stages, including an interview at an ACI Concrete Convention. “Traveling to the United States for an interview was nerve-racking, but I remembered Siham’s encouragement and trusted myself,” said Hassan. His perseverance paid off when he was selected as the 2023-2024 ACI Foundation Middle East & North Africa Fellowship recipient.
Experiencing the Fellowship—A Journey of Growth
Receiving the fellowship opened numerous doors for Hassan. He gained access to exclusive networking opportunities, industry events, and invaluable mentorship.
“The fellowship has been a game-changer for me,” he noted. “It has not only provided financial support but also connected me with professionals and mentors who have guided my career development.”
One of the highlights of the fellowship was attending the ACI Concrete Convention in the United States, where he met fellow recipients and industry leaders. “Being part of the ACI community is like being part of a family,” Hassan said. “The support and encouragement I’ve received have been incredible.”
The Impact of ACI and the Fellowship on Career Aspirations
Hassan’s involvement with ACI has significantly influenced his career aspirations. “The fellowship has given me the confidence to pursue my goals and expand my horizons,” he said. “I’ve been able to explore new areas of civil engineering, such as three-dimensional concrete printing, which aligns with my interest in integrating technology into the field.”
Looking ahead, Hassan is excited about the future. “I see myself continuing to contribute to the civil engineering industry through innovative solutions and sustainable practices,” he shared. “This fellowship has laid a strong foundation for my career, and I’m eager to build upon it.”
Advice for Aspiring Engineers
For students and young professionals considering a career in the concrete industry and civil engineering, Hassan offered this advice: “Trust the process and stay committed to your goals. Seek out opportunities to learn and grow, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The challenges you face will only make you stronger.”
He also emphasized the importance of mentorship and community support. “Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your potential,” he advised. “Their guidance and encouragement can make a world of difference.”
The Role of Donors and Mentors
Hassan is deeply grateful for the support of donors and mentors who have made his journey possible. “Their generosity and belief in the next generation of engineers are truly inspiring,” he said. “I hope to one day give back and support future students in their pursuit of excellence.”
The Future with ACI—Continuing the Legacy
Hassan’s connection with ACI extends beyond the fellowship. He envisions a future where he remains actively involved with the organization, contributing to its mission and fostering the growth of young engineers. “ACI has played a pivotal role in my development, and I want to continue being part of this incredible community,” he asserted.
